Logistic process automation

Automated logistics is gearing up to be the next step in material handling and storage system solutions. Pandemics aside, rising escalations in operational costs and driver shortages have hampered warehouses. Businesses have found themselves struggling to retain reliable and qualified employees. However, with automated trucks, businesses can boost their efficiency and have consistent performance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Whilst automated solutions might not be the answer for all areas of logistics, there is no denying their benefits. By eliminating unnecessary processes, you can redirect attention to areas that need it most. Working with pinpoint accuracy, automated trucks can reduce damage and are safe and practical. They proactively stop and alert unexpected obstacles – human or not – whenever they cross their path. Plus, they alleviate the ergonomic impact of repetitive, physically demanding tasks. Which is a growing concern in today’s fast-paced working environment. That is why, in conjunction with Toyota, Locators is taking the first step to bringing automation to you. Step-by-step, we can show you how people and automated trucks can complement each other.

Toyota’s automation specialises in order preparation, product sortation and high-density storage technologies. Here’s how state-of-the-art automated trucks could benefit your business.

Modular Thinking

A systematic approach helps you identify common functions. These can then equate to configurable modules for repetitive use.

Lean Thinking

Locators’ automated team will help identify, streamline and eliminate waste – making for a smoother automation process.

Logistics Solutions

Whether you’re looking to increase your output, flexibility or resilience; we’re with you from concept to implementation.

Locators – lifting standards across the industry.

Automation of repetitive pallet handling.

In cooperation with Toyota, Locators offers a range of automated trucks known as “Autopilots”. These cover different types of material handling and guarantee a smooth and lean workflow. Automated trucks can safely and efficiently handle standard pallets. Meanwhile, your staff can focus on the less mundane tasks and handle the more valuable and complex assignments. Better yet, these automated trucks can be equipped with Lithium-Ion batteries for auto charging. This way, your automated trucks are truly automated and can be charged in-between tasks without the need for personnel.

Safe Pallet Handling

Built-in safety scanners and obstacle detection allows autopilots to safely complete all pallet handling tasks alongside manual operators.

Precise Navigation

Automated trucks feature two highly accurate and adaptive navigation technologies: reflector or natural. These can be combined for dual navigation.

Intelligent Communication

Autopilot trucks are controlled by Toyota’s in-house automation software. This integrates with your existing WMS to track goods storage, orders, traffic flow and more.

Smart Charging

With the ability of auto-charging, automated trucks can charge in-between tasks without the need of personnel or charging rooms.

Return on Investment

Requiring less maintenance and energy, automated trucks contribute can typically achieve a return on investment within 2 years.

Automated long-distance transport or milk runs.

Item handling is key for manufacturing sites. To optimise your warehouse, Toyota has developed its easy-to-use Autopilot range. These automated trucks can automatically hook/unhook the train safely at predefined workstations. With the automated towing truck you can organise “milk runs” in your organisation’s production area too. Autopilots can be equipped with Lithium-ion batteries. This allows for auto-charging, meaning the trucks can charge in-between tasks without the need of personnel.

Efficient Replenishment

Automated tow trains carry more pallets in one go and offer safe fork-free material handling in busy areas such as assembly lines.

Variety of Load Carriers

Depending on the type of load, weight and the loading/unloading operations, Toyota provide a range of adequate homologated carriers.

Semi-automated high-density storage solutions

This high-density, deep storage solution uses semi-automated shuttles. With these in play, the solution can store and retrieve palletised goods from the racking. The shuttles are placed in the racking by automated trucks or standard forklifts. This saves a lot of time since trucks – automated or not – only need to bring the pallets to the entrance of the racking channels. Whilst the shuttle transports the pallet to its final position, the forklift can retrieve the next pallet. This way, pallets can be handled faster, increasing productivity and decreasing operational costs.

Safe Pallet Handling

Each Radioshuttle is equipped with features like warning lights, audio signals, bright and clear display systems and a laser scanner safety system.

Clear Connectivity

There is a remote-controlled communication between the truck and shuttle with a “one-push function” serving unlimited number of shuttles.

Efficient Productivity

The Radioshuttle works with various load carriers and can operate > 8 h with standard batteries and > 16h with Li-ion batteries.

Quick & Easy Charging

Each charging station can handle 2 battery sets (4 battery cassettes). These are placed within drawers that automatically charge upon closure.

Cold Store Operation

Shuttles can operate in temperatures down to -30°C. High-density storage is ideal for cold store operation, as pallet locations in cold areas are expensive.

What our clients say

We are very pleased with the change from an engine to an electric fleet. The trucks have been well received by our operators as they are comfortable and quiet to drive and give excellent protection from the elements. We even have the option and flexibility to use spare batteries and a simple battery change system if we ever want to work back to back shifts in the future. Locators also design, supply and install all types of racking and storage systems. They reconfigured the CooperVision warehouse for narrow aisle operation which increases the storage density and pallet locations. Locators supplied Aisle-Master articulated forklifts to work in this area.

Coopervision, Hamble

We have worked with Locators for nearly 20 years. We are confident they can always make the best use of the space we have available and provide us with forklifts that are well suited for the long loads and other stock we have to move.

Colin Macgregor
Director, Y Goldberg

Every time we look at an application, Locators approach it like a blank canvas and always recommend the best equipment for our business. Locators have proved themselves as a very reliable and proactive service provider by keeping our trucks working and our fleet costs as low as possible.

Adam Conrad
Group Transport Manager for Covers

Being able to work with one supplier for storage and materials handling has been a benefit to us. Locators managed the complete installation and ensured the correct materials handling equipment was specified for their design. They also service and maintain all of the equipment they have supplied and offer a rack inspection service to make sure our warehouse remains a safe working environment. We are very happy with our new facility and we believe we have made the best use of the available space.

Marc Congdon
Engineering Manager, Costa

We purchased our first Toyota forklift from Locators 14 years ago for our farm. This truck has been very reliable and is still in service so we had no hesitation in deciding to purchase another Toyota machine. Locators recommended an electric forklift for our machinery depot as it is very quiet, has low running costs and does not create any pollution, making it ideal for working both inside and outside. Our operators are very pleased with our new Toyota truck and our business is very happy to be operating a forklift that has such a low impact on the environment.

Ed Smales
Director, NFFM

Locators installed the new racking system within a tight timeframe while our business was fully operational. They have provided us with a facility that has a similar storage capacity and reduced the size of our forklift fleet allowing us to lease one building instead of two. We are very happy with the outcome.

Paul Bickell
Nippon Express

Locators gave us the benefit of working with just one supplier for all of the storage and materials handling requirements of this project. By mixing 3 and 4 wheel trucks from the same model range, we have gained extra pallet locations and have the option to battery change between them and work multi-shift in the future. I was initially sceptical that electric trucks could replace LPG, but I am very pleased with the successful outcome of this project.

Mark Davis
Logistics Supervisor for Hall & Woodhouse brewery

It is a great benefit to us that we have a single source supplier who understands the needs of our business. This saves us time, improves efficiency and ultimately reduces cost.
